Mobility Initiative Zurich – why Speed 50 is not progress

Realistic street scene: An SUV brakes while a girl with a backpack crosses the street. Clearly marked braking distances show the difference between 30 km/h (green) and 50 km/h (red).

Why the «Mobility initiative» leads back to the past

In Zurich currently a debate is taking place about the so‑called Mobility Initiative – carried by a committee of bourgeois parties. Its goal: On main streets, speed 50 should basically be reinstated speed 50 apply, restrictions such as speed 30 should remain the exception.
That sounds like “freedom in traffic“, but in truth it is a step back in terms of safety, environment and spatial planning.

Safety is not an opinion – it is physics

Who brakes, needs time and distance.
And exactly here speed limit 30 is often underestimated:

At Speed 50 the average braking distance of about 28 meters.
At Speed 30 is only about 13 meters.

That means: a vehicle traveling at 50 km/h comes only after double the distance to a stop – and anyone traveling at 50, in a danger situation usually hasn't even braked yet, when the car at 30 is already stopped.

This simple physics decides life or death – especially in densely populated areas where children, cyclists or older people are on the move.

Space is the new gold

The initiative talks about “fluid traffic“, but hides that every car also needs space when it is stationary.
Parking space is one of the biggest cost drivers and land eaters in our municipalities.

Shared vehicles – like at Sponti-Car – solve exactly this problem:
A car-sharing vehicle replaces up to ten private vehicles.
That saves resources, space and emissions – and makes mobility more efficient.

Not anti‑car – but sensible

It's not about banning cars. It's about using them more intelligently.
Every vehicle that is produced and eventually disposed of generates emissions – even an electric car.
Sharing instead of owning is the simplest way to reduce this burden – without giving up, but with impact.

Conclusion: Progress means sharing, not accelerating

The mobility initiative wants traffic „accelerate“ – but sustainable mobility does not arise from speed, but from Cooperation.
Instead of promoting old reflexes, we should invest in offers that save space, reduce emissions and increase safety.
Sponti-Car stands for this future: efficient, shared and climate‑friendly.
