Deep in the hilly Toggenburg, not far from Mosnang in the canton of St. Gallen, people have been telling a peculiar legend for generations, which is both eerie and fascinating. Once, the story begins, there lived a quiet farmer there, who was diligent but rarely spoke and often stayed in the dense forests. Although the villagers knew him, they avoided him, because it was said he had a strange connection to nature.

One evening, however, when a heavy thunderstorm rolled in and lightning illuminated the hills, the farmer was seen standing on a rise, raising his arms and apparently speaking to the storm. Shortly thereafter the wind died down, and the rain stopped abruptly. Consequently, people began to whisper, and while some considered him blessed, others feared him even more.

Yet that was not enough: In the following weeks animals kept disappearing repeatedly, and at the same time strange lights were seen in the forest. Because the fear grew, some brave ones decided to pursue the matter. However, when they ventured deeper into the forest, they found only a clearing where the farmer was kneeling, while around him a flickering glow danced.

Suddenly, however, he vanished without a trace, and although he was searched for, he was never seen again. Since then, as they say, mysterious lights appear on stormy nights near Mosnang, and while the wind rustles through the trees, some believe they hear a voice that speaks softly with the storm.
