The history of Unterschächen dates back to the 13th century, when it was first mentioned as a community of Spiringen. Between 600 and 700 AD, the area was settled by Alemanni, with field names indicating an earlier Romance population. In 1687 Unterschächen gained independence from Spiringen and became an independent parish and municipality.

A special chapter in the village's history is the «Healing Bath at Unterschächen», which was discovered in 1414. This healing spring gained great significance in the 17th and 18th centuries, but later lost influence. Today the healing water flows into the municipal water supply.
